“My name is Sage Sanderson. I got introduced to the Salvation Army as an alcoholic in 2014. My life had become unmanageable and needed some guidance and structure. The Salvation Army provided that and more, free of charge. They gave me life skills I still use to this day. I got an AA sponsor, I was introduced to a loving God, and became passionate about helping others in similar situations. I completed the six-month program and was hired as a driver. From a driver, I got the opportunity to become the dispatcher. From dispatcher, I became the intake counselor, and from intake counselor I became the administrative assistant. Part of my administrative assistant duties involve reaching out to the community. That is how I was introduced to South Austin Business Association (SABA). SABA is a group of business owners in the Austin area. At those meetings, I met a man, 'Greg the Gold Guy'. We had become friends as most of us do by being a part of this group. He’s a basketball fan as am I and we are both from California, so he was one of the first business owners I befriended. Working with the Salvation Army, we receive donations from the public. Donations can range from clothing, couches, vacuums etc. From time to time we also get collectibles, rare items such as jewelry and GOLD! We received a donation of 26 ounces of gold bars and Greg immediately came to mind. I contacted our Director of Operations, Mark Miller, and explained to him I have a man that is interested in purchasing some of the gold we had received as a donation. I networked the two together and Greg purchased close to $10,000 worth of gold (5 ounces). The Salvation Army can’t thank Greg enough for his purchase and is always happy to work with local businesses in the Austin area. All revenue from the purchases of our donations go to help men between the ages 21-65 with alcohol and drug related issues.
